A kind of diving bell studded with railway buffers, Cavor’s ship is positively luxurious inside, with wood panels and button-back, upholstered walls to prevent bruised knees and elbows. The adorably quaint 1964 film adaptation, co-written by Nigel “ Quatermass” Kneale and directed by Nathan H Juran, remains surprisingly faithful to the book – right down to Cavor’s craft, which takes its spherical design from the illustrations in the novel’s UK and US first editions.
